Sue Boyce
Liberal Senator for Queensland
I know many, many people have given time, goods, services
and money to help flooded and storm wracked Queenslanders
but we can’t stop now because there are still many hundreds
of families struggling to survive.

Almost four long months since the floods, only $66 million of
the $255 million donated to the Queensland Disaster Relief
Appeal has been distributed.

I have visited the flood areas a number of times, most
recently in the company of members of the Queensland
Lions Clubs who have been working tirelessly in the streets of the southside of Brisbane and in the Lockyer Valley.

What they, Lifeline and the residents have told me is terribly upsetting.

Most of the flood affected people I met are ‘battlers’ and yet many of them have been ruled as ineligible for flood recovery assistance. They have been told they have too many assets!

This is especially hard to take when they stand in the ruin of their most substantial asset, their home.
Derelict, ruined homes are everywhere. They stand idle because the residents have been denied insurance and cannot afford to repair and rebuild.

Families have been split up in order to find a roof and a bed; people are sleeping in caravans, even in cars. Many are struggling to afford the basics of daily life.

Hundreds of Queensland individuals and families have been left out on a limb and don’t have the capacity, let alone the resilience to continue – please remember these are people who in many cases have lost everything.

I have written to Australia’s top 100 companies asking each to donate $5,000 to provide immediate assistance. I will be updating their response below.

The Australian Lions Foundation will be responsible for receiving the money and distributing the funds to Queensland Lions to provide assistance on the ground.  Channel Nine, in the normal course of their broadcasting will also be supporting the Flood 100 Campaign. We will keep you informed of our progress and if you know a possible donor, give them a nudge in our direction.

All donations should be made payable to the Australian Lions Foundation. Donations to the Foundation are tax deductible. The address for donations is – The Treasurer, Australian Lions Foundation 39-47 High Road Burpengary, Qld 4505.
